blue headed parrot (*Pionus menstruus*) is a notable species of parrot indigenous to Central and South

America, with a significant presence in Trinidad and Tobago. This avian species is

characterized by its vibrant

green plumage, complemented by a distinctive blue head and neck, alongside a striking red throat band and

red undertail coverts (UWI St. Augustine, 2017). Adult Blue-headed Parrots typically measure about 28 cm in

length and are known for their social behavior,

often found in flocks of up to 15 individuals. However, during

the breeding season commencing in May, they tend to pair off for reproduction (UWI St. Augustine, 2017).

 More about blue headed parrot

Blue-headed Parrots inhabit diverse environments including lowland rainforests and plantations at elevations

up to 600 meters. Their diet primarily consists of fruits, flowers, and seeds; however, this feeding behavior can

occasionally lead to crop damage in agricultural settings (UWI St. Augustine, 2017). Nesting occurs within tree

cavities where females lay between three to four eggs that hatch after approximately 24-26 days. The young

birds attain independence around three months of age but do not reach sexual maturity until they are between

three to five years old (UWI St. Augustine, 2017).

Despite their generally robust health profile with an average lifespan of about 25 years—some individuals

living up to 40 years—Blue-headed Parrots are not immune to diseases such as those caused by

*Mycobacterium genavense*, which was identified as a

cause of mortality in one case study involving

aimported bird (2010). Understanding the biology and ecology of the Blue-headed Parrot is essential for

conservation efforts aimed at protecting this captivating species.
